So last weekend, I played catch-up at the movies! Having seen all blockbuster films, I opted to celebrate the smaller flicks, often the ones with emotionally-laden stories.
I saw "Vicky Christina Barcelona" and "Frozen River" back to back.
"Vicky Christina Barcelona," directed by Woody Allen, was just okay, it's a travelogue exercise that showcased the strong, strong performance by Penelope Cruz as Maria Elena.
Forget Vicky (Rebecca Hall), forget Christina (Scarlett Johannson), but don't forget Maria Elena!
BUT THE MOVIE THAT WAS GOOD IN ITS ENTIRETY FROM THE CAST TO THE STORY IS "FROZEN RIVER."
I enjoyed this film! It won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and deservingly so!
'Twas days before Christmas in the life of Ray (Melissa Leo) who decided to start smuggling illegal immigrants between Quebec and New York State using the frozen river, and with help from Mohawk Lila (Misty Upham).
IT'S THRILLING, INTRICATE, AND THE IMAGES WILL STAY WITH YOU!
MELISSA LEO DESERVES A BEST ACTRESS OSCAR NOD!
Go watch this film right now!
