I had no idea what to expect with "Bandslam," but I had faith that director Todd Graff would do wonders with the material. In 2003, Graff wrote and directed "Camp" which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at that year's Sundance.
This time, the director is back with singing kids and a rockin' soundtrack to give us one of the most fulfilling movies this summer.
Vanessa Hudgens (Sa5m -- the 5 is silent)and Alyson Michalka (Charolotte) are fantastic but newcomer Gaelan Connell (Will Burton) is the anchor of the film. His role as a high school loser with great love for rock and roll is the focal point of the film. But perennial scene-stealer Lisa Kudrow as Gaelan's mom well, steals the show.
There is no false note in the film, the script is funny and touching, and the end result is a sweet movie about kids wanting to rock out at Bandslam, the annual band contest that turns high school rock bands into professional rock stars!
Oh yeah, there's a cameo by a respectable rock god!
So this is no "High School Musical." Trust me!
"Bandslam" opens nationwide on August 14th! And I will post my full review plus my interviews with Vanessa Hudgens, Alyson Michalka, Gaelan Connell, and Lisa Kudrow very soon!
"TWILIGHT" NEWS:
My Summit contact confirmed to me that "Twilight Saga: New Moon" trailer will be shown before "Bandslam" on its theatrical release! And he said that it's a great trailer! But he won't tell me anything else...darn it, I wish they showed the trailer during the screening last night, but I'll keep on asking for info
