"Bourne 4" Gets New Writer

Universal Pictures has signed Joshua Zetumer to write the fourth installment of the "Bourne" film series. However, the studio also wants "The Bourne Ultimatum" writer, George Nolfi, to return to the franchise and write his own version of the script.

It is a practice known in Hollywood as "parallel script." Having multiple scribes write different scripts for one movie, then combine all the ideas. It's a rare practice but was used in films like "Star Trek Generations," "Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer," and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

What do those films have in common? They're not great films; hence, the parallel script theory does not work!

Nolfi, who initially worked on the fourth "Bourne" film, had to leave the series to write and direct "The Adjustment Bureau," an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story that will reteam him with "Bourne" star Matt Damon.

"The Adjustment Bureau" will begin filming in September, so Nolfi had to bow out of "Bourne." But Universal wanted "Bourne" to be a part of its 2011 slate that they scrambled to hire Zetumer to write a new script.

Zetumer is creating buzz around Hollywood for writing "Dune" for Pete Berg. He also wrote "The Infiltrator," a Warner Bros. film that has Leonardo DiCaprio attached. Zetumer is an untested talent, but apparently, his "Dune" script is phenomenal!
